Over the past 15 years I've had the privilege of helping patients all across the SE Alaska area with their herniated disc / bulging disc problems.
Our clinic is different in that we dig, find, and FIX the root cause of the problem. We don't simply "mask" the symptom with a medication.
We'll determine the cause which will then determine our course of action. In other words, a herniated / bulging disc will require different treatment than misalignments / subluxation.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Disc Anatomy
The little cushions that lie between your vertebrae are called the intervertebral discs. Each of these discs has a tough outer ring and a soft gel-like center. The job of your disc is to separate your vertebrae from one another. These discs act as cushions or shock absorbers so that the bones don’t make contact with each other as you move around.
- A protruding disc occurs when the disc becomes asymmetrical and the gel bulges, oftentimes hitting / putting pressure on the nerve.
- A herniated disc is when the disc material has ruptured to the point that the gel pushes outward / severely irritating / putting pressure on the nerve.
- A disc extrusion is the worst type of disc injury. This is when the gel balloons extensively into the area outside the vertebrae or breaks off from the disc.
Spinal Decompression
One of our treatment modalities for herniated or bulging discs is called spinal decompression, also known as non-surgical spinal decompression. It utilizes spinal decompression tables to relieve pain by creating a scenario in which the bulging or herniated disc tissue is able to move back into place and heal, alleviating the pain this condition causes.
Spinal decompression aims to help patients who suffer from debilitating pain due to bulging, degenerating, or herniated discs. It can also be used for the pain management and treatment of many causes of sciatica, injured spinal nerve roots, & worn out spinal joints.
The therapy itself works to stretch the spine in order to create negative pressure and space within the disc to allow disc fluid to move back into place. This creates an environment in which the disc can receive more nutrients & hydration and therefore heal itself more quickly and effectively.

What Happens On The First Visit?
Very simple. You'll meet with one of the doctors to discuss your concerns. A thorough health history will be performed follow by an examination / evaluation. From there if we think we can help, we'll tell you. If we think a referral to a specialist will be better suited for your needs, we'll provide that. During your 2nd visit is when we provide care plan instructions / recommended action plan moving forward.Is Chiropractic Safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the SAFESST, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of musculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following a chiropractic adjustment, but some may experience mild muscle soreness, stiffness, similar to a post exercise muscle soreness. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation is typically gone within 24 hours.

Absolutely! We see of ton of kids at natural health solutions. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and traumas from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Kids have spines (just like adults) and their spines need to be maintained throughout life as well. Chiropractic care is always modified to the individual. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, we provide a very gentle approach.If I Start Chiropractic Care - Do I Have To Keep Coming Back?
Our approach is hands on. Because of this it may require a number of visits to fix the underlying problem. In contrast, a course of treatment from medical doctors often involves a pre-established plan that is conducted at home (i.e. taking a course of antibiotics once a day for a couple of weeks or taking pain killers). As chiropractors we provide hands on treatments which makes a sequence of visits sometimes necessary. We will give you our best recommendations during your 2nd visit in our clinic.
